Solo Spice defining moments

With Melanie C due to release a new solo album on September 4 and the video to her latest single, Think About It hitting YouTube last week, it stirred some nostalgia about what the defining solo moments were for each of The Spice Girls. With 75 million records worldwide, making them the best-selling female group of all time the girls had some amazing opportunities to work with some of the top pop acts around.

With only Melanie C making music at the moment, and rumours that they will be part of the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony, here’s what I think were their defining moments as solo spices.

Melanie B – I Want You Back

Invited to work with Missy Elliott on the single “I Want You Back”, a song for the soundtrack of the film Why Do Fools Fall in Love gave Mel B her first and only UK #1.

Melanie C – When You’re Gone

With the best voice Mel C enjoyed an amazing run of hit solo singles following the rather strange Going Down including Northern Star, Never Be The Same Again and I Turn To You. My favourite solo effort was featuring on this track with Bryan Adams.

Emma Bunton – What I Am

Tin Tin Out and Bunton’s cover version of the Edie Brickell and Kenny Withrow track debuted and peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart in 1999, losing the battle against co-Spice Girl member Geri Halliwell’s “Lift Me Up”.

Victoria Beckham – Out of your mind

Released in the summer of 2000, Out of Your Mind by True Steppers and also featuring Dane Bowers climbed in at number 2 in the UK charts. The single was kept from the number one spot by Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Spillers Groovejet (If This Aint Love).

Geri Halliwell – Look At Me

Following the split from The Spice Girls, Geri returned with the first track from Schizophonic in 1999 which includes various different images of Geri’s public persona and a funeral for ginger.
